White earthenware, wheel-thrown and burnished with a stainless steel tool. After drying the vessel was painted with a heavy coat of terra sigillata, polished immediately, and bisque fired at cone 010 (1640 F). A cut tape resist was applied. Areas not to be covered in glaze were waxed and salt sprinkled on the wet wax to create the speckles. The piece was then glazed with a thin wash. For firing, it was placed in a topless concrete block box, covered with wood, and fired. After cooling it was removed and dusted. The tape resist burned off and the exposed areas were painted with acrylic pigments.
Finally, the piece was sealed with urethane gel.
The original object was scanned as a TIFF file on a Nikon Coolscan 4000 film scanner at approximately 4000 pixels on the long dimension. A 300 ppi JPEG file limited to 1024 pixels on the long dimension was then added to the CONTENTdm database.
