Wheel-thrown and altered, and bisque fired at approximately cone 08-05 (1740-1880 F) to render the clay somewhat dense yet open enough to withstand the thermal shock of the raku process. The glazes were applied by brush, using a rubber resist to mask certain areas. The glazed firing was judged by eye, removed the piece from the kiln when the glazes were in a shiny molten state (around 1740 F). It was then placed in a pit lined with damp straw and covered with additional damp straw. This smoking was continued for approximately one half hour until the piece was completely cooled.
The original object was scanned as a TIFF file on a Nikon Coolscan 4000 film scanner at approximately 4000 pixels on the long dimension. A 300 ppi JPEG file limited to 1024 pixels on the long dimension was then added to the CONTENTdm database.
