A composite of wheel-thrown and molded slab elements were used to create this piece. The images were drawn on the bisque ware, outlined with latex, slipped with a background color and airbrushed with additional colored slips. Highlights and patterning were delineated with a small hand brush. After a period of drying a clear glaze was applied, then waxed and the latex removed to reveal a sharply defined image. The piece was then slowly fired (one or two hours) in a fiber raku kiln, and post-reduced inside a modified refrigerator for approximately one hour.
The original object was scanned as a TIFF file on a Nikon Coolscan 4000 film scanner at approximately 4000 pixels on the long dimension. A 300 ppi JPEG file limited to 1024 pixels on the long dimension was then added to the CONTENTdm database.
