Sheets of linen rag paper were formed Western style and couched to laminate an area larger than the paper mold. Bamboo and branches were positioned on this large sheet and fastened down with strips of freshly-formed linen rag paper. Color was added to the surface by squirt bottles and hand manipulation using linen pulp mixed with pigment and methyl cellulose. A vacuum table was used to drain the excess water from the piece and to tighten its structure. The piece was dried on the table with some additional restraints to inhibit warpage.
The original object was scanned as a TIFF file on a Nikon Coolscan 4000 film scanner at approximately 4000 pixels on the long dimension. A 300 ppi JPEG file limited to 1024 pixels on the long dimension was then added to the CONTENTdm database.
