In the 1950s, the city held a design competition to build the Memphis Academy of Arts in Overton Park. The complex included an art school combined with a concert hall and museum. The 2nd Southeast Region Workshop was a 2-1/2 day event held at the Memphis Academy of Arts in Memphis, Tennessee, June 9-11, 1967. The workshops were open to the public, although aimed primarily at active members of the American Craftsmen's Council. Workshops were held by American ceramists Karen Karnes and Phillip Ward, and American textile designers Alma Lesch and Glen Kaufmen.
