James Lee Byars, creator of the performance celebration "UP?", holding a spool that contained one mile of Japanese gold paper thread, the other end of which was attached to a ten foot helium-filled weather balloon. The balloon and helium were donated by the Helium Centennial Committee, a group of over 50 government agencies and private companies to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of helium. The release of the balloon, a New Year's "gift to the universe" took place in New York City on January 1, 1968 at precisely noon. The exhibition "Made With Paper" was held at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts from November 18, 1967-January 7, 1968.
